Actors Headshot, Jay Waylett

Jay, who is a young aspiring actor based in Haywards Heath Sussex, called me with an urgent request to make an actors headshot for a film casting that he wanted to attend 3 days later, and wondered if I could fit him into a photo session here in my Brighton studio.

Unfortunately the studio was completely booked out with other clients and I suggested we do his last-minute actors headshot outdoors. Of course on the day that we’d arranged it was freezing cold, heavy showers and blowing a mini-gale.

Jay wasn’t put-out and neither was I – so I suggested he come along to my house as I sometimes shoot actors headshots in my garden with reflectors and lights and thought we could sit out the rain hoping we might get lucky with a break in the weather and jump outside. I did this because Jay was really keen to get his shots done quickly, and I was happy to oblige.

Hey and we got lucky with the rain – with clever use of location equipment we managed to make some brilliant warm, sunny photos of Jay for his casting, even though it was actually dull and miserable and cold.

I’m such a huge believer in remaining positive and never giving up and this was so true for Jay’s photoshoot.

Here are three from the hour we had together – Jay was brilliant to work with (I loved the way he followed directions and could go from ‘intense stare” to ‘glowing-smile’ in the blink of an eye), and I wish him all the best in his career.

Jay-Waylett-Actor-Headshot-Brighton-01 Jay-Waylett-Actor-Headshot-Brighton-02 Jay-Waylett-Actor-Headshot-BrightonI used the impressive Nikon D800 and the Nikon 70- 200 f 2.8 for Jay’s Brighton headshots.

Paul Chapman Business Portrait Headshot

I’m really pleased to have made this business portrait headshot of Paul Chapman for his company profile, CV and social media.

Paul was so easy and fun to photograph. I set up in his office using my portable lighting and studio equipment and after 10 minutes we were done and dusted, with this brilliant shot.

Having a business portrait headshot taken doesn’t have to mean any disruption to your office or your diary. I come over to your business, set up somewhere out of the way and get everything ready. Then I ask you to slip over, give you a few simple clues about what to do in front of the camera – flash, bang, wallap and you’re done – a great image for your website or brochure.paul-chapman-business-portrait-headshot-brightonI am always surprised by the poor standard of the photography on the profiles of businesses and companies, whether they are based in Brighton, a little village in Sussex or the big bad city of London. Surely if you are going to include a photo of yourself or an employee then it should be a decent one – either serious or fun, as long as it is professional. I know that if I look a company’s profile and see poor photography then I do wonder about the professionalism of the people there.

Musical Theatre Actress Rosie Zeidler Headshots

I just love these new headshot portraits from my photoshoot of the lovely Rosie, who is a student of musical theatre, and I photographed her at her home near Brighton Sussex.

Rosie wanted a variety of headshot looks from her photoshoot, to help with her application to study drama and musical theatre at university. I set up a small location photographic studio inside, and we also braved the cold to get some photographs in the garden (with a nice bit of low winter sun helping us out a bit).

Rosie was totally professional, took brilliant directions and I’m sure she will love her career choice.

Here are just 4 from the photoshoot.

Portrait of Stage Combat Actor – Brighton Photographer

Jon Harrison, a specialist martial arts and stage combat actor, came down from London to have his actor’s Spotlight headshots taken in my Brighton studio. Jon brought with him smallswords, rapiers, daggers and all kinds of things I’d never seen before, and it was a really interesting photoshoot.

Jon has studied acting, martial arts and stage combat and wanted a varied selection of shots for Spotlight and his new agent.

It was a fascinating photoshoot and he came away with some amazing headshot portraits, both conventional and more edgy. I have started to use a Nikon D800 for portrait headshots, and I’m really impressed with the resolution from its 36 MP sensor, and the wide tonal range available. Simply stunning. Here is the D800 combined with the 70-200 2.8 lens

So here are just a few shots from Jon’s portfolio Spotlight photoshoot.

Portrait Headshots of Designer Leanna Williams

Leanna Williams is a lingerie designer working just outside Brighton, Sussex and has developed a new luxury range for her own company (harlowandfox.co.uk). She asked me to provide a variety of PR images and so I visited her in her beautiful home and studio for the photoshoot.

Leanna was lovely to work with and her designs are absolutely wonderful. I decided on a subtle toning for the final images which was achieved with a combination of lighting at the photo-session and also in post-processing back at my studio.

As always I used my brilliant Nikon D3s with (in these two photos) the 85 1.4 or the 24-70 2.8. Both amazing lenses.

Here are a couple of my faves from the shoot.

Brighton Headshot Portraits – Actor Inti Conde

Inti Conde is a young actor and singer, and he came into my Brighton photography studio last week to get his Spotlight headshot portraits updated.

Inti had just returned from a season singing in an Opera in France and wants to get more acting work, and he realises how important a decent professional Spotlight headshot is to get castings. He’s such a lovely guy and great in front of the camera, and I wish him all the best for what will be a great future in the business.

Here are three from the photo session.

American Express Corporate Headshot Portraits

As a photographer I love the challenge of making headshot portraits for high-end businesses and big companies. I often find the people I meet really impress me with their charm and warm welcomes, and so it was with American Express when they commissioned me to photograph some of their top people in their Brighton HQ.

It’s always a challenge to set up a portable studio in a meeting room as you never know how large or (usually) how small these rooms are; full of tables and chairs and white boards etc. But the lovely people at American Express found me a huge beautiful room in which to set up my location photographic studio. Actually their new offices are sensational.

With slots of 10-15 minutes per person the photographer is always going to be up against the time, but in this case my ‘models’ were just so lovely, professional and easy going. Here are my favourite shots of Keith, Vanessa, Vanessa and Adrian

As usual I used my amazing Nikon D3s with the Nikon 70-200 2.8 lens and a variety of portable flashes such as the Elinchrom Quadra and Nikon SB800s.

All the shots were processed in Lightroom 5 and retouched in Photoshop CS5.

Colin Bell by Brighton Portrait Photographer

Colin Bell has a new novel published in a few weeks and got in touch to have a new set of publicity headshot portraits.

I set up a small studio in his delightful Lewes home and we made some memorable and atmospheric images. Colin was brilliant in front of the camera as can be seen by this image below.

Colin’s novel is titled ‘Stephen Dearsley’s Summer of Love’ and will be published by Ward Wood. And btw – Colin’s blog is a fascinating place to spend some time too (www.wolfiewolfgang.com).

Here’s my favourite from the photoshoot, looking not unlike he should be starring in some Scandanavian TV crime series.
