Creative Portraits of Writer Sarah Dry

The Brighton writer, Sarah Dry got in touch for some creative portraits for her new book on Isaac Newton (The Newton Papers – Oxford University Press). So on a cold, dull and drizzly November morning I loaded the car with my photography gear and headed over to her lovely home in Brighton, which by coincidence was 2 streets away from where I live!

Sarah needed the new headshot portraits for the book cover, the publisher’s website and for other PR to promote the book sales.

Sarah wanted her portrait photography to be quite relaxed and so we set up a small location studio in her living room and spent just a few minutes making some simple studio-style shots. Then we popped into her garden for the rest of her photoshoot. This was so Sarah would have a choice of different style of portrait for the book cover.

I love the gentle calmness to these portraits, and I wish Sarah all the best with the new book.

David Bowie Re-creation Portrait in Brighton

As a photographer in little-ole Brighton I get some fascinating requests. Recently I had to ‘recreate’ the look and feel of the photograph of David Bowie’s 1975 Album cover “Young Americans’ for the writer Jeremy Good as part of his publicity material for his new novel, using the writer as the model.

It was really interesting to be in the studio and work out the photographic lighting used back in 1975 by the original photographer Eric Stephen Jacobs (who apparently based his idea on Bowie’s choreographer, Toni Basil, when she was on the cover of the September 1974 issue of After Dark).

And so the inspiration continues …….

Brighton Studio Portrait of the Writer Jeremy Good

The writer Jeremy Good has a new book coming out and wanted a series of PR publicity photos to promote it for posters, the web and the book sleeve. After he had a bit of a marathon drive over from Chichester we finally spent a couple of hours in my Brighton photographic studio and worked through a few really diverse looks for him.

Jeremy is a lovely guy and was great to work with and I wish him well for the book.

Here are just four of my favourite shots – all taken with the remarkable Nikon D3s, 70-200 VR11 and a few Elinchrom lights.

Stephen Churchett headshot, Brighton

I was delighted to meet and photograph the charming writer/actor Stephen Churchett this week at his Brighton home. Stephen writes Lewis and Morse amongst others and also a fine actor having appeared in many films and TV shows over the years such as ‘Law and Order’, ‘Marple’ and ‘The Brief’. He asked me to make some new headshot casting portraits for his Spotlight page and here below is my personal favourite.
